Who are we when no one is watching?

I used to wonder this, as a young girl,

Sitting in my bed, looking up in wonder

At the subtle shapes my ceiling made.

Who are we when we are alone?

When the world’s judgemental eye

Is off us for even one second,

Who do we become?

Perhaps a baker, a dancer, a singer,

Maybe we finally work up the courage

To paint that one picture,

That one we always dreamed of...

Who are we when no one is watching?

When no camera is trained, spying?

We are quiet, crying or just sitting staring

Or we’re loud hoping they won’t leave us alone

Show that they are caring

Some will tell lies to stir up the silence

To stir up drama to escape the hate of their quiet

Some just wait by someone’s side

Waiting for them to breathe, waiting for it to be right

Solitary time is how I fill my cup,

Board games and writing keeps energy up.

At work, always on — just one call away,

Small talk and faking my way through the day.
