Writing Prompt

POEM STARTER

Submitted by Maranda Quinn

Write a poem from the perspective of someone who obviously hates — or is just extremely bad at — poetry.

Try to consider why someone may feel pressured to write a poem. Love? A school project?

I Hate Poetry

What is this thing that you’ve given me?

Why must you give me a poem?

I’m not a poet,

I’m a real writer.

I have no respect for this style of writing,

It doesn’t make sense.

Why would you spend time,

Finding words that rhyme?

And trying to make it significant?

You can do that with a story I tell you,

It takes about half of the effort.

And meter,

What even is it?

Why does it matter,

To writers like...

Ordinary

There are some times when

words become tired,

their efforts redundant,

their meaning lost.

Then, I wish I could speak

with a common man’s tongue,

and spit the words into existence

plainly, without art, without

thought....

Words Of A Poem

May I write this poem in hate

For I don’t and never will

Understand how people create

And understand each concept

Of each word written

For each word

Has a meaning

A feeling

I can’t understand

Or like

Then the differnt meanings of poems

Makes it easy for me to

The rhyme of them scratches my brain

How do to people create such

Masterful worlds of art

While mine

Is just a tapestry

This Poem Is Going To Be The Death Of Me

Bees are the farmers of the natural world.

Flowers are the stocks of crops, strong, and still.

Bouquets are like the produce that comes from farms.

The queen bee is the government, and sometimes she will be overthrown.

This is terrible! I have never been a writer, much less a poet! Why do we have this unit in English anyways? It doesn’t seem like something we need_ to learn about. And...

Bad at poetry

Once upon a time

Is that how you start a poem

Or a fairytale?

Does it matter?

What am I doing anyway?

Does it have to rhyme?

“The rat and the cat, sat on the mat”

“Snug as a bug in a rug”

Is that a poem,

Or just a cheesy line

Princess

Dragon

Knight

“Thats not a poem”

Oh alright

Tears

Fears

Turning gears

“Are you alright?”

But thats a poem right?

Am I bad a poetry

Or just this poem?

A Poem (I Guess) for My Wife

(By Your Husband, Who Tried)

Roses are red,

but so is the warning light in my truck when I don’t check the oil.

You tell me to check it.

I don’t.

You love me anyway.

That’s love, right?

You’re like… a good lawn mower.

Dependable. Strong.

Gets the job done but also doesn’t yell when I forget to do the trimming.

Okay, sometimes you yell. But like, in a cute way.

She’s Gonna Reject Me As Soon As She Reads This…

Red as an apple,

Bright and… dapple?,

You make my cheeks red,

I love your… head,

Violets are very blue,

So, so… so blue,

Like your nice blue orbs,

That make me go shalorb.

Sugar is sweet,

You’re a box of treats,

That I wanna eat,

Because you look like a tootsie roll to me.

I do love you,

I don’t know what to do,

Something something flight,

Um… What else should I write?

Um… I hope you smile...

Not Really Into poetry

What’s that smell?

It’s reminds me of something

Can’t put my finger on it

I just can’t remember

Such a familiar scent

Let me take another whiff!

It brings me back to my happy days

When I was just a child

That wonderful, aroma!

Made me feel warm and secure

I remember,it clearly now

It was my Moms perfume!...

Valentine's Day

On this annual Valentine’s Day,

I will write you a sonnet.

I will shine my love on you,

As bright as a close-passing comet.

You asked me to show up,

And that’s what I’ll do.

I’ll do what’s uncomfy,

Because I love you.

So on this one day,

Of the three sixty-five,

I will give you my everything,

Till I'm no longer alive.
