POEM STARTER
Submitted by Maranda Quinn
Write a poem from the perspective of someone who obviously hates — or is just extremely bad at — poetry.
Try to consider why someone may feel pressured to write a poem. Love? A school project?
I Hate Poetry
What is this thing that you’ve given me?
Why must you give me a poem?
I’m not a poet,
I’m a real writer.
I have no respect for this style of writing,
It doesn’t make sense.
Why would you spend time,
Finding words that rhyme?
And trying to make it significant?
You can do that with a story I tell you,
It takes about half of the effort.
And meter,
What even is it?
Why does it matter,
To writers like Shakespeare and Poe?
They have better writings,
Like plays and short stories,
Both of which have much more meaning.
And apparently,
You can write a poem,
Just by writing some words.
Something that Langston Hughes uses,
I think it’s called free verse.
But why would you waste all your time,
Writing something that defeats the point of poetry?
Writing words and phrases that don’t rhyme.
This rant, though long is not over,
I must talk about different types.
Haikus are three lines?
Why?
Just write nothing or say it out loud.
Sonnets are too loving,
Why not just admit to the girls with your heart in real time?
Free verse,
I will always find it stupid,
I hate it with fire in my core.
I’m done with this prompt,
Give me another one now,
I hate poetry,
Anyone who writes it is a clown.
