POEM STARTER

Corruption

Write a poem that addresses the theme of corruption. This is an uncommon theme to express poetically, so think about different types of corruption, and how they can best be explored through poetry.

Hamilton Snippet

Corruption’s such an old song that we can sing along in harmony

& nowhere is it stronger than in Albany

This colony’s economy’s increasingly stalling & honestly that’s why public service seems to be calling me

I practiced the law, I practically perfected it

I’ve seen injustice in the world & I’ve corrected it

Now for a strong central democracy

If not then I’ll be Socrates throwing these verbal ro...

Corruption

You can’t stop it

You never see it

Until you’re in too deep

These mirrors stay black

And your hands still drip

But yet you never stop falling

The lines become

Poison in your veins

And what seems so good

Destroyed you

Sometimes the wings

That you built out of wax

Is the reason you fell

and they melted

Maybe the sun

Was never meant to be close

And you’ve been locked away ever since

The mirrors show...

Heavy Is The Head

Absolute power corrupts absolutely,

I stand as witness observing it mutely,

Big boss man, who am I to refute thee?

And so the cycle starts.

Making decisions that just preserve power,

Solve for the minute but not for the hour,

Upon your tall throne in your ivory tower,

Keeping things on path.

I try to see past all the mirrors and smoke,

The haze is so thick that I start to choke,

The uprising’s s...

Numb To Corruption.

Like a lioness, I prowl on the lonely

On the singled out and gouty

When everything seems normal

And the tall walls come down,

I step lightly on my feet to pounce.

Do you see that lurking, dark shadow of yours?

How it was before when you turn

Then reaching it’s ready hand out

rot

i’ve watched you

as you rotted from

the inside out,

your lungs turning

to the ash you breathe,

your heart turning cold

as the bodies left behind you,

your bones become infested

with termites until

you can’t stand

anymore,

your veins, filled

with writhing maggots,

as they

eat you, starting with each

organ, before

eating eachother.

snakes squirm within

your skull, until there

is no brain left, until...

Dead Dream

I have a knife

For I am ablit to inflict pain

For upon the soul

For you should be weary

For noting goes

And nothing gone

Al is lost

All is gone

All but my knife

And your blood

Staining the floor

Head on the counter

With ear in my hand

Kissing your dead lips

Kissing your head

Pretending

But my knife and your soul

Would be no more

Than a dead dream

Who’s To Trust?

Blood, sweat, and briny tears,

Dripping down the drain,

Swore to muffle fears,

But ruin the terrain.

Once power was mighty,

But now tricks the hearts,

Their system untidy,

Subtle apathy darts.

The shadows consume,

A cloud over earth,

An evil, dark gloom,

Greed’s its only worth.

A numbing parasite,

That eats at the potent’s flesh,

This Is Not Who I Once Loved

You look at me

Different than before

You once looked at me with a glow in your eyes

You once had joy and brightness in your smile

You used to glow more than the sun itself

Now your eyes are dark and cold

Your smile quivers and is thirsty for power

You aren’t kissed by the sun anymore

Not the moon

You have been sucked into a black hole

It is too late for you

You once craved laughter

Now all you...

Corrupted Decomposition

The ducks didn’t return to the lake after the storm.

The color has drained.

I should’ve known better.

Maybe I did know what I was walking into.

I knew it was a trap.

I figured if I was trapped, daily decisions would be taken out of my hands.

I thought he was there to save me.

He wasn’t.

He didn’t want to save me.

He wanted to be God.

He wanted to be the only one I knew.

He wanted to peal apar...
