POEM STARTER

Corruption

Write a poem that addresses the theme of corruption. This is an uncommon theme to express poetically, so think about different types of corruption, and how they can best be explored through poetry.

Heavy Is The Head

Absolute power corrupts absolutely,

I stand as witness observing it mutely,

Big boss man, who am I to refute thee?

And so the cycle starts.

Making decisions that just preserve power,

Solve for the minute but not for the hour,

Upon your tall throne in your ivory tower,

Keeping things on path.

I try to see past all the mirrors and smoke,

The haze is so thick that I start to choke,

The uprising’s started, the passions evoked,

Democracy declared dead.

The factions unite for a common cause,

Whilst you sleep easy, we don’t rest assured.

It worked it in the past, but that was before,

We’re coming for your head.
