Writing Prompt

POEM STARTER

Write a poem on any topic you like using slant rhyme.

Slant rhyme is where two words sound very similar, but do not exactly rhyme. For example: soon/gloom, cloud/doubt.

Poison Ivy.

The wind is trying to ruffle my mind,

The voices whispering since I arrived,

Trying to blow me off my path,

Asking “how long will I last?”

Until I see things their way.

The thorns are digging deep into my skin,

The poison ivy is trying to make me flinch,

I wish to choose my own grave,

My own life, my own fate—

I swear it won’t be a waste.

I know they long for the best of me,

But can they let m...

Deck the halls with gasoline!

Light the match and watch it gleam!

Now the school is burnt to ashes!

five years on and you’re almost gone

Get Over

I am up in the clouds

Trying to get rid of my doubts

It may be soon

But I need to get rid of this gloom

It may be my doom

But let’s try not to swoon

Let not fall over

And go over the river

Before we get rid of the doubts

Up in the clouds...

Control

To be in control of what happens to you

Will always put you in a good mood

Making you feel sure that everything is fine

That everything is working out and is defined

We love things to be as how we want them to be

Perfect, just right, with no problems to be seen

It makes us feel happy, safe, and at peace

We will ensure this feeling will not be breached

We will do anything possible

The Oath and the Abyss

The horse gallops toward peril.

The world bathed in light, ethereal.

Battered and banished,

yet wearing the vestiges,

of my old master.

From the recesses of my mind,

he speaks,

his voice eloquent,

The danger imminent.

An oblique relic of a foregone age.

His complex lexicon

bridges the chasm

of empty

reverie

inside me.

And still I ride on.

Toward the ominous,

the precarious,

Protests

I can hear them chant.

They rant.

They scant.

They enchant me.

Their impact very low.

But, yet they continue to advance in a vast group....

Puddle

An unfaithful mirror, clearer

Than a truthful tounge, flung

Across pen, paper

And stitched by stapler

To create notes, for folk

Who feel the need to see to know

To witness to grow

As if the puddle was the worth

To the knowledge unearthed in hurt

And love

The puddle doesn’t rise above

It just tells you what you hear

So listen to the rain

Don’t ask the puddle for your sir....

The Queen Has Teeth

I am the court jester,

Bleeding laughter—calcified eschar

Of despair. I grew weary dancing over the king’s hot coals

And listening to his woes:

Oh, the Queen

Used her teeth

To skin his manhood while it was still pulsating,

Fresh from the slaughter—as we were saving

The best for last.

Corrosion blacker than his morning coffee.

She runs herself a bath,
