I woke up to knocking on glass.

Three taps. Sharp. Measured. Not wind or tree or dumbass bird.

Naturally, I figured window. I live alone, top floor, so either it was a drunk pigeon or a ghost with bad GPS. But when I turned my head toward the window—nothing. No breeze. No branches. Just the city yawning in the dark.

Then the knocking came again.

This time: tap-tap-tap.

Behind me.

From the mirr...

Not Me

My peaceful night's rest was disturbed by a faint tapping. Reluctantly, I pried my eyes open, blinking rapidly, as I looked for the source. The room was still dark, just as I had left it; that couldn't be said about the rocking chair near my grandmother's antique mirror. It's home usually sat beside the mirror in front of the window, now it sits directly in front of it, facing it head-on.

As my h...

The Other Side

For my birthday, I got an old antique mirror. I was happy when I got it, after all it look like it came from a horror movie, so do it fit right in with the rest of my room decor. My mom made a big deal of telling me it wasn’t a portal to another world. Okay so I did have a bit of an active imagination, but this is real life. I knew the difference of the two.

My dad set up the mirror in my room n...

Alice

Alice in wonderland

This isn’t Disneyland

Don’t give me your hand

Are you caught in quicksand

Please just go away

The mad hatter is here to stay

I didn’t hear, what’d he say

Wind blows and then you sway

Mirror mirror on the wall

Alice looks like she’ll fall

Tell her to leave that’s all

She really isn’t very tall...

Little Night Terrors

The sound of glass shattering, the dreaded sounds of screams. I was stuck in a shrinking black room, the darkness somehow holding screams. The sound of a car screeching, everything breaking, and the reacting feeling of my heart being yanked into my head, making my head throb.

“Not again!” I held my head clenching my fingers over my ears, trying to rip the sound from my ears. The screaming walls s...

Left Behind

As I was trying to sleep under my blanket, so warm and sleek

I suddenly heard a knock

I got up and wanted to take a peek

Whatever caused my shock

I got out of my bed

Walked over to where my window was

I was still tired so I rubbed my head

I assumed someone was throwing rocks at the window because

My friends have done this before

So they could have my attention

They haven’t broken the window but...

EGO

It was entirely me,

Without correction,

Though I'm never what I can see,

The fault of my reflection

It does not care for anyone,

With unfixed eyes like a corpse

And it has no warmth;

The lips could not have looked worse.

Purple. Bruised. Numb. Slumped.

Nor does it have my passion,

My skill,

Or my stride;

My hopes and my desires,

My ability to confide,

Nor my unrestrained persistence to remain t...

Don’t Tap The Glass

Mornings are the best time of day. The half-sleep, half-awake space when anything is possible. This morning was burnt toast. Bonkers was snoring and farting. The boys were running up or down the stairs, and Marla was shouting at them from the kitchen to stop because Daddy was sleeping in. The step stomping grew louder. Pretending to sleep, I smiled into my pillow. Any minute, one of the boys would...

The Void

I am sleeping until I hear the sound of knocking on glass, I walk over to the window open it, look out it, and then close it. I thought it was just my imagination so I go back to bed until I heard another knock but it didn’t sound like it was coming from the window so I look around but then I hear a knocking right behind me I turn around and found nothing in the mirror, literally, like not even my...

Mirror Loop

I screamed, but my mouth did not move. As I rose my hands, the mirror image refused to copy. Instead, my reflection pounded on the glass, as if I were trapped. She pointed behind me, begging me to listen to her.

I turned, only to feel a push on my chest.

I crashed through the mirror.

“You fool,” my reflection shouted. “Now we are trapped together.”

I stare at her, trying to comprehend what jus...
