POEM STARTER

Write a poem about a birthday.

This doesn't have to be about your own birthday. What themes could you explore through writing about birthdays?

Reminders

Birthdays

They are not always celebratory

They are reminders

of what you don’t have

The missing people

that should be here

The missing moments

that should have happened

They are reminders

of what you have

Loving mom and sisters

A few friends

the ones that count

They are reminders

I see myself at my age

and think that I’m behind

I should know the direction

of where my life is going

But I’m kinda lost

And I’ve come to realize

or at least getting to recognize

that it’s ok

I don’t need to know

It’s ok to not know

———

(It’s my birthday! For people who think you have it all figured out after graduating from college or after you reach a certain age, it’s totally not the case. At least not always.

It’s taking me some time to fully process and accept that, but I’m getting there.

For my birthday, write one sentence on something you’re working on! Have a lovely day!)
