STORY STARTER

Submitted by D.H.R

Write a story about two childhood friends who made a promise, but as young adults, they struggle with whether to keep it.

Your Shallow Heart

We promised,

As young and foolish children,

To always be there for each other.

We had sworn,

We would forever be friends,

Always have each other’s backs

It appears,

You haven’t upheld your end,

And I question whether to do the same.

You critique,

Every little thing I do,

There’s no room for me to breathe.

You love me,

As a shell of a person,

You lost the right to truly know me.

When was it,

That my trust in you had broke?

When you ignored me? Or displayed hate?

I won’t think,

Won’t remember when we laughed,

Won’t remember your shattered edges.

I’m aware,

If I remember too much,

I will run back to your shallow heart.

You’re my friend,

At least, you once resembled one,

But now I don’t know what love means.
