Sand

**_-Inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean -_**__

_Sand. Why sand? It could be anything else. It could be the grass, maybe dirt, ever mud, but sand? Ugh, it’s the opposite of the sea! And why is it everywhere? There’s nothing else but stupid desert._

Captain Edrick’s thoughts wizzed with simple whines and protests as he perched on the top of the ship’s mast, precariously dangling his legs from the edge. He sighed, taking off his hat and wafting it across his face in a futile attempt to keep himself cool.

“Captain?” A squeaky voice called from the deck. Edrick’s ears perked up and he gazed down, his eyes searching for the source of the noise. That’s when he spotted him. Benton was sat on the deck, twiddling his thumbs. Good old Benton.

Edrick clambered down from the mast, bent down to his level and met the young man’s eyes, “how did you get here, eh?”

“I-I don’t know, Captain.” He patted some sand out of his hair, his wide eyes seeming almost frightened of it, “But it’s awfully different than the sea.”

“Of course it is.” Edrick said bluntly. He straightened to his full height. “Well, it just so happens that if you fall off a giant waterfall, you end up in a desert.” He paused, crossing his arms, “makes sense, doesn’t it?”

Benton missed the sarcasm, “It does…?”

“Of course not, dimwit.” The captain paced around the ship. “Completely defeats this whole ‘Earth is round’ nonsense everyone is rambling about.”

“So you’re saying we fell off the side of the earth?” Benton scrambled to his feet.

“It’s the best explanation, isnt it?”

“Err, aye, captain.”

With that, Captain Edrick hopped off the side of the boat and immediately scrunched his nose when he felt the sand under his feet. _Ah, so it sinks, how delightful. _In the ocean, you only sank if you were heavy, but this damn sand crap makes you sink no matter what you weigh! He huffed, scuffing his boot on the ground.

The thud beside him brought Edrick out of his rambling thoughts.

He turned to see Benton standing. “I thought sand was supposed to be soft…” he muttered.

A fond smile creeped onto the Captain’s lips, but he swiftly covered it with a stoic face. “Let’s get moving. Maybe there’s an end to this sandy hell.”

“Aye, aye, Captain.”

He began his confident stride. Then, after a while, he paused, then looked back, “and bring the rum.”

_it’s a bit fast-paced, so I am not entirely happy with it. Let me know if it was hard to follow, as I think it is_
