STORY STARTER
To get into the afterlife, your soul has to fulfil its truest desire on earth. Some people never find their purpose, and can never move on.
Write about a character who is trying to discover or complete their true goal before they die.

âOh noâŚâ Addie trailed off. She stared at the crumpled yellow parchment in her hand.
âOh yes,â Archer replied grinning. âPlease tell me this is a joke?â Addie asked.
âOh, itâs absolutely true. You can check the signature,â Archer replied tapping the paper with his hand.
âI was just a little kid when I wrote this, I didnât know it would determine what would happen when and if I die.â
Addie said tugging on her sweaterâs sleeve.
âIf? Addie please, youâre so clumsy youâll probably die stumbling off a cliff you didnât see was there.â
Addie slapped Archer on the arm.
âHey, I donât make the rules. Besides, we have time to get to know each other again before-â Addie shoved her hand over Archerâs mouth, her face bright red.
âWould you not?!â She scolded.
Archer laughed again and pushed her hand away.
âItâs gotta happen sooner or later, Iâll be waiting,â he said as he winked and flew toward his house.
Addieâs shimmery pink and blue wings seemed duller as she flew up through the beautiful forest to the Waterlilly Cafe.
Maybe Camryn could help.
Addie woke to a thump on her window. She rubbed her eyes and looked around the dark room.
Archer was crouched on her windowsill, and when she saw him he grinned.
She hated that he looked so cute.
âWhat do you need creep?â She asked opening her window.
Archer ducked and slid inside her room.
âJust, yâknow, stopping by,â he said walking around.
âDonât you have some princely duty to get done?â Addie snapped as her anger from a long time ago came back.
Archerâs smile faded.
âSo thatâs why everything changed.â
Addie glared. âWhy what changed? You never had time for me since you became royalty. The only thing that ever changed was _you_.â
She said, her throat clogging up. She tried not to let the emotions take control as her eyes watered.
Archer stepped closer to her.
âI never wanted to lose you, Dee, it wasnât my choice.â
A tear slipped down Addieâs cheek.
âThen why didnât you tell me?â She yelled. âWhy didnât you tell me what was happening?â
âAddie I know-â âNo you donât!â Addie practically screamed.
âYou just disappeared, stopped showing up, and I had no idea what was happening to you. You just _left_.
âDo you have _any_ idea how _terrifying_ that was for me?â
Archer looked at his feet as Addie choked on her sobs.
âIâm sorry Addie, I had no idea. But I know sorry doesnât cut it.
âI understand if you donât forgive me yet. I hope one day youâll be able to.â
The sadness in his eyes looked so sincere, so real. Addie almost gave in.
âI need time.â She said quickly, glad Archer had finally acknowledged what heâd done wrong.
He wasnât all that bad.
Archer managed a small smile before climbing out of her window.
âWait!â Addie yelled, reaching out her hand. Archer poked his head back in.
âI⌠I think Iâve had enough time. I miss you.â She mumbled under her breath.
Archer grinned broadly and ran to her. He hugged her tightly.
âI missed you too Dee.â
âDo you think we could try? Try and be⌠what we wanted to be before you left?â Addie whispered.
Archerâs smile slipped.
âIâm sorry, it was a stupid idea. I mean, we hardly know each other anymore and-â Archer cut her off with a long, drawn-out kiss.
Addie was shocked. Her eyes went wide.
âWoah, what? Didnât you just? How did you?â She was more confused than sheâd ever been before.
Archer smiled.
âI was just surprised you still wanted to try and be something. Youâve always seemed distant, even before I left. I figured I should take the chance as soon as I got it.â
Addie smiled a tiny tiny smile.
She tried to force it down before he could see, but she couldnât.
âYour smile is cute, you should do it more.â Archer teased.
Addie frowned. âI donât smile.â
Archer took her hand and kissed her again. âYou do when I do that.â
Ugh.
He was right.
Camryn burst through the window.
âIt didnât work,â she said to Archer.
Archerâs hand dropped. âWhat? Itâs only twelve.â He said rushing to the window.
Camryn paled. âI donât know what happened, but it didnât work.â
âWhat didnât work? Whatâs she talking about Archer?â Addie asked worriedly.
âIâll explain later. But for now, weâre not safe.â
He pointed out the window.
Addie walked to the window and nearly fell backward.
The city was on fire. Engulfed in blue and purple flames.
âI need an explanation. _Now_.â
Camryn and Archer shared a nervous look before Archer told her. âThat paper⌠it wasnât fake, it just wasnât the whole truth.
âWhat was really written on your paper was _âfind your prince.â_â
Addie crossed her arms. âAnd you just assumed that was you?â
Archer blushed. âThatâs not the point. Addie⌠youâre special. Thereâs always been something different about you.
âThatâs why I like you so much.â He paused. Addie suddenly felt bad for him.
His whole life heâd been pushed out, and now he had finally been getting the credit he deserved.
She stepped next to him and looped her arm through his.
He continued.
âYour wish twisted something in the universe. We were supposed to discard it, and discard you, but my dad didnât. The curse put on our people was harsh.
âInstead he gave you to a woman in the forest and said _âher destiny is far greater than you believe.â_â
âOh,â Addie said, moving her arms.
He had only acted that way to complete something. She was just another royal task.
âWe were supposed to have that checked off by tonight, one day before your seventeenth birthday. Thatâs why I came by. I figured you would give in, but you can never be sure.â
Archer said.
âSo this was all just for something an old man told you a long time ago? You donâtâŚâ Addie tried her best not to trail off, but it happened anyway.
âAbsolutely not. It was a perfect opportunity to reconnect with you and fix everyoneâs lives forever. I swear to you, it may seem fake, but I mean it.â
Archer squeezed her hand and she looked at Camryn.
âSo what now?â She asked.
âNow we go into hiding and hope the new king doesnât kill us for what Archerâs dad did,â Camryn responded.
Addie took Archerâs hand as they climbed out the window.
âYou ready?â He asked.
âNot at all,â Addie responded.
âLetâs go,â Camryn said
