The Four

"Those are GPS coordinates," her partner said.

"What are GPS coordinates?" Detective Sloane responded, not remotely aware to what what her partner was referring.

She wasn’t a morning person.

Neither was she a night owl. She loved her rest and anything that disrupted her sleep irritated her beyond belief. It was just 4 A.M. and a new body was found by one of those morning joggers she considered inhuman, for needing so little sleep. She couldn’t wrap her head around the idea of waking up so early to go for a run. She could barely function with anything less than eight hours of sleep.

Most days, it took her till probably 9 A.M. before her synapses started to fire, or earlier if she mixed coffee and a can of Red Bull. She had begrudgingly gotten out of bed at 3:30 A.M., freshened up half-heartedly and made the drive to the crime scene. She had to admit that there was some appeal to being up that early. There was no traffic and it was quiet and peaceful.

It was summer time and they had to move fast. The report came in that the body still looked fresh. If they were able to process it with haste judiciously, they might be able to solve this one, in record time.

The summer sun was brutal to dead bodies. Not like anything could be more brutal than the person who killed them in the first place, but it sped up the decomposition process rapidly.

At the scene, she wished her cup of coffee and Red Bull would kick in. Her partner had made it to the crime scene before she did, and started filling her in on some of the details. But her mind swirled with thoughts of her cool room and warm bed.

"Look at her arm, right by her elbow. She has one on both arms," her partner mentioned, gesturing to the body on the ground.

Detective Sloane did as her partner said and sure enough she found two neat tattoos.

On the left arm was: 44° 1' 20.748'' N and 92° 28' 0.3036'' W, tattooed in two lines. She looked over to the right arm and found the other: 41° 47' 17.52'' N and 87° 36' 16.1712'' W. In the same style and pattern.

Detective Sloane took out her work issued cellphone, crouched close to the body and took three pictures of each tattoo. While she was down, close to the body, she noticed the faint smell of lavender. She looked around but didn’t notice any lavender plants nearby. She also noticed that the victim’s nails were well manicured, with only a coat of clear nail polish on them. No dirt under her nails. No bruises or scratches. Detective Sloane opened her voice memo app and dictated these observations.

Just before she could stand back up, she noticed a small black spot by the victim’s ankles. The victim had a billowy green palazzo pant that was all the way to her ankle. Detective Sloane took out her pocket size instrument set that included a tweezer, and neatly used it to move the pant leg on the left side of the victim. Just above the ankle bone were two neat rows of numbers in the same tattoo style as the ones on her arms.

These ones were: 32° 47' 29.814'' N and 117° 5' 43.4616'' W.

She checked the right ankle and found yet another coordinate: 26° 29' 37.3524'' N and 127° 57' 31.8672'' E.

She snapped three pictures of both tattoos like she did with the arms. Close ups and from different angles.

“More coordinates?” her partner asked, giving her a hand to help her get out of her crouching position.

“Yeah, one just above the interior of each ankle,” Detective Sloane answered.

“Didn’t see those ones. Forward me your pictures, would you? The medical examiners get really ticked off when we disturb the body too much before they are done with it.” her partner said.

“Any identification found?” Detective Sloane asked.

“None so far,” her partner responded.

"Do you have uniforms canvassing the area?”

“Done. I got three teams out with their dogs.”

“Did you question the jogger yet?”

“Yes. He said this is his daily morning jogging path with his dog. It loops for a total of five miles. His dog pulled him off the trail, which was unusual. He said his dog is well behaved and stays on the trail. That is how he discovered the body.”

“Do you buy his story?”

"He said he didn't recognize the victim. But I have someone taking his statement and verifying his alibi though."
