WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a difficult conversation between two characters without using any dialogue tags.

Dialogue tags describe the speech - 'he whispered', 'she murmered', 'they said' etc. Removing these indicators will encourage you to make the dialogue speak for itself, instead of relying on tags to describe and clarify the intent behind the words.

I never thought I’d break your heart

“We need to talk.”

“Sure! What’s up?”

“It’s… it’s kind of hard to say.”

“You know you can tell me anything love.”

“I know, but…”

“We’ll get through it together! We always do.”

“Not this.”

“You’re scaring me, sweetheart…”

“I… don’t love you anymore.”

“You…”

“I’m sorry. I’m not going to tell you a let-me-down-softly lie or make believe story about why, because I don’t know. It’s no ones fault, least of all yours, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care about you…”

“Hey! Hey… it’s okay. I understand.”

“But how?”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“I always thought I’d marry you some day…”

“So did I.”

“I never thought I’d break your heart.”

“So did I.”
