Write a short story about a fantasy creature going to the doctor for their yearly check-up. What would they measure? What constitutes as 'normal'?
Duggy & The Dentist 🦷
There once was a young dragon named Duggy who lived below where the cliff overhangs. He loved to eat candy and breathe fire, but hated brushing his fangs. His mother told him that if he wanted to keep them strong and pearly white, he had to brush them twice a day, both morning and night. But Duggy would much rather play games after eating — there was no time to brush when his friends were competing!
One night after chewing and chomping on chestnuts and cherries, Duggy bit down and heard a loud crunch that sounded awfully scary!
“Ouch!” Duggy yelped as his mother came running. “I think I hurt my mouth.” Little Duggy was sad — the pain was rather stunning. “
“Then it’s off to the dentist, in the morning, we must go.” His mother soothed him with hugs, put him to bed, and said, “sometimes things hurt when we grow.”
The next day, Duggy and Mom flew off to the hills, where dentists practice their trade. His tooth still ached but he tried to be brave — even though he was really afraid.
“Will the dentist take my tooth? Will I still be able to chew?” Duggy wasn’t sure what to expect.
His mother smiled and reassured her son, “The dentist will know just what you need. All you must do is open your mouth and let him inspect.”
When they landed on the hill, a nice Nurse met them and said “the doctor will be right with you.”
Duggy was nervous, his little knees started knocking — this was all so strange and new!
Then The Dentist came out with a hearty “hello,” he smiled very friendly and his teeth were all aglow. “What seems to be the problem, my boy?” Duggy shrugged, he wasn’t sure.
“Let’s have a look! Open up and say ‘ahh’…” The Dentist peered into Duggy’s mouth and said, “Hmm - I have just the cure!”
“It’s a cavity, and it’s a good size.” The Dentist poked gently at Duggy’s dark dent. Then the nice Nurse handed the Dentist some quick-drying cement.
“Let’s clean it up and patch it to make it all well. You’ll be able to chew again just like no one could ever tell.”
Duggy smiled, at last — what the Dentist said was such a relief! Then he realized what he needed to do to prevent such future grief.
“All fixed, my boy! Just like new! But from now on, do you know what you have to do?”
Duggy smiled at the dentist, for he knew, “I have to brush them twice a day, morning and night, so they can stay healthy and look like new.”
His Mother, the Nurse and the Dentist all praised him for being so quick and so smart. Now Duggy brushes his teeth all the time — before any cavities can get their start! Duggy made sure to see the Dentist two times every year and because he takes care of his teeth and fangs, his visits are happy, with nothing to fear.
