Adversaries Who Loved
A tense whisper echoed in the dimly lit valley, “We need to get out of here, now!”
All agents reported to their positions.
“What’s going on?” I reply, tapping on my earpiece.
“Our location has been breached, they know we’re here.”
Adrenaline settles into my blood, pushing my feet forward in a sprint. We jump onto another building, then another, and slide down by a canopy. The van is in sight, but still far away. And in a flash, the van starts moving, so we all run to catch up with it.
Taking turns jumping into the van, sighs of relief filled the car.
“How did they know?” A teammate asks.
“I’m not sure, but they definitely knew.”
“It was probably Jelina.” One girl replies, and that starts a fight. Others add who they think it was.
I squint at the new girl teammate, with long black hair, black eye shadow, and an edgy personality. Could she be the one who gave our enemies the details?
I let those thoughts rest, and we start planning our next attack.
“Oh, and before we begin, we have someone who will be joining us,” our director said.
Everyone’s gaze goes to the man making an entrance. My eyes widen in surprise, and I whisper under my breath. “_Arthur_.”
“Why is he here?” I ask.
“Because we will need him. We aren’t playing a fool, we _can’t_. They stole our people from us, they know most of our every moves. We need someone who thinks like them.”
He smirks at that reply.
I squint at him, and he grins back. Enjoying this.
Later on, I look at him, then at an empty room and he follows.
“What do you think you’re doing here?” I growl.
“Well, you guys need my help.”
“I don’t believe you.” I declare, slowly walking towards him. And he doesn’t flinch.
“The tough girl act doesn’t fit you,” He closes the distance and touches my face.
I grab his hand and throw it down. “You little—“
“Save the pleasantries. I’m only here for one thing. _You_.”
I snicker, “Yeah right.”
He looks at me genuinely. My heart skips a beat, but I keep my guard up. “You’re just a really good liar.”
He stays silent for a couple of minutes. “You’re very strong-willed, Jennie.”
“Don’t call me that,” I growl.
“_Jennie_,” He smiles, amused.
“You don’t get to call me that!”
“Then tell me what I can do to get you to believe me?”
“If you feel that way, then you'd better start begging.”
He gets down on his knees, and lifts his head, a smirk on his lips.
I start laughing and gesture for him to get up.
He gets up, laughing too. And I hug him.
“I missed you,” I tighten my grasp on him.
He rests his head on mine. “I missed you.”
“How was my acting?” I said playfully, still in his embrace.
“You’re getting better by the day,” He responds, amused.
“Why did you have to leave? I thought you might’ve gotten hurt,” I pout.
“I would’ve never let that happen,” He pulls back, still holding my hands. Then places a kiss on my forehead.
“Did I already say how I missed you?”
“Yes, but tell me again.” He smiled.
I hug him again.
“You’re my safe place, you know? I was worried I’d never see you again.”
“Me too, “He replied. “But you’re here.”
“I am.”
“So you’ll help us?” I ask playfully.
“_Love_, I think you know the answer.” He matches my energy.
“Okay, let’s go.” I grab his hand, gently squeezing it, then let it go.
