STORY STARTER
Write a short story from the point of view of a member of staff at the Arrivals gate of a busy airport.
Which events in this job could you focus on to drive an interesting narrative?
wrong place, wrong time
“Just a moment”
“Hi, how are you”
And “Passport please”
Turns into “it’s a matter of national security”
Words repeated
Every thirty second
Make it seem like
The entire world depends on it
The second hand ticks
So so slowly
People pass us by
Working like controlled machinery
And then I wait
But then TSA are running
I whip my head back
Alarms are now blaring
It’s chaos
I clutch my bag, tight to my check
Murmuring a silent prayer
As I am herded with everyone else
Letting god take care of the rest
I feel fat tears
Slip down my face
And we my heart thunders
I look out at when it should be-the plane
I should be in the air right now
But instead I’m huddled with everyone else
People I have never seen
The only reason
I’m not caving in on myself
I turn to the ceiling
My vision now blurring
And ask God
“Why me?”
And stifle
A cry
Always stuck
In the wrong time
Wrong place
And then
Law enforcement arrives
Murmuring words of comfort
Telling us things are now alright
It was just a false alarm,
No need for a fright
But then I think
How feeble are our lives
To actually realize
It doesn’t matter
Who lives
And who dies
