POEM STARTER

Submitted by em_andherbooks

Write a poem that describes the longing of a reader who falls hopelessly in love with a fictional character.

Happily Ever After

So…my prompt finally made it through to you all! Here’s my take on it 🫶

A happily ever after,

Was nothing but a hoax.

His hand reached out for mine,

Except I slammed the book closed.

They had all called me crazy,

I just had to be mistook.

But one simple glance,

Was all it really took.

We danced among portals,

he showed me the stars.

I’d read of every love story,

Except one I could call ours.

Then once upon time,

He was no longer in sight.

My hands fluttered through the pages,

Searching desperately for my knight.

The one in shining armor,

That all old stories wrote about.

The one who they said was broken,

But he had just wanted out.

I promised I could fix him,

Show him what _we_ are.

But somehow we were forever too close,

Yet forever too far.

And halfway through our story,

He met another girl.

But it didn’t entail the same dramatics,

If that would have happened in my world.

All he did was drift away,

My hands flipped faster along pages,

But the girl he now held,

Would be stealing all his passionate gazes.

The way he held her,

Made her shine.

And when they danced?

It stopped time.

I’d rooted for them until the end,

Wishing their love could grow divine.

But let me change “happily ever after”,

To “I’ll always wish you’ll be mine.

The woman seemed so satisfied,

Except her name didn’t belong to me.

My eyes still fixed on the words of a man,

That I would love…but never see.
