STORY STARTER

Write a statement from a criminal who is on trial for a murder they feel no remorse for.

Consider why this character doesn't regret their actions.

ROBIN

What is a criminal really?

Has anyone ever stopped to ask themselves this question? Is a father who killed their child’s kidnapper a criminal?

Is a son who shot his abusive father a criminal?

Is the mother who stole from the local grocery store to feed her children a criminal?

I pose these questions to the court. I want those present today to go home and ponder them. Because one of the people I just mentioned could be you or your neighbor.

Society has turned its back on the needy, the poor, the disenfranchised. My actions were not a freewheeling joy ride. I intended to wake us up.

Wake Up People! Wake Up!

I’m not sorry that I took from the billionaires to help the needy. I’m not sorry that I paid the rent, the hospital bills, or the student loans of those crushed under the sole of life. I’m only sorry I didn’t get to help as many people as I originally set out to do.

The murders that I committed as part of my raids were necessary. I think society needs a cleansing. I think the greedy capitalists need to be burnt at a stake, like they did to witches in days long gone. Those women didn't deserve their fate, but those capitalist did.

The question has been posed to me, time and time again, and here is my answer.

It was necessary. I'm honored to have been chosen.
