BREAKING: Mysterious Death On Palm Street - Police Assume Suicide
I stared down at the body in front of me. It appeared to be exceedingly normal in all regards. A middle-aged American male, somewhere between 35 and 40 years, about 6'1" tall, roughly 170 pounds- the exact details escaped me, but I was sure I had them written down somewhere from when I first examined the body at the scene.
The man had short brown hair, brown eyes, a slight tan, and overall seemed perfectly healthy.
That was where the problem started.
There was no sign of any probable cause of death. The body showed no wounds, neither from knives, bullets nor any other weapon. No visible injuries of any kind. The analysis of his stomach contents had revealed no toxic substances.
So far, nothing too strange. I simply took a blood sample and had my colleague, Dr. Jones, analyze it for possible traces of any harmful substance. She took the sample and promised to have it down by tomorrow.
Jones didn't come to work the next day, and when I went to her lab, it was unoccupied. Her desk had been cleared out, her locker was empty, and her computer had been moved from her lab.
I was going to ask around when I spotted something in the corner. In the crack of a broken tile, there was a USB stick.
By this point, I was understandably concerned. Nevertheless, I hurried back to my lab and put the stick into my PC.
On it was just a single report, written just yesterday. An analysis of a blood sample- my blood sample, as I could see by the case number.
I opened the file and-
'Conclusion: Subject is not human. Requires further inquiry with Dr. Phillips.'

There's been no trace of Dr. Jones since. I tried to ask around for her right after I read her report, but nobody could tell me anything.
By the time I got back to my lab, they were there, waiting for me. Men in black suits, wearing sunglasses. They didn't identify themselves as belonging to any government agency, simply gave me a warning: don't be a hero.
The body had been removed from my laboratory, all files and samples related to it confiscated. An official briefing had been sent out, declaring the death a suicide and closing the case.
I asked them what happened to Dr. Jones, but all they told me was that she had chosen to disobey a direct order and was let go as a result.
But people who are let go don't just disappear from the employee registry. People who are let go don't just move out of their house with no notification. People who are let go don't just disappear.

I called in a favor, scheduled an interview and talked to the press.
Before I even got back to my car, I received an email, notifying me that my doctorate had been retracted.
Within minutes, I'd been fired from my job, and articles painting me as a pills-addicted mental health case in the middle of a psychotic break had gone up on several major news sites.
I was sure that they were already waiting for me back home, but I was prepared. I'd packed my bags with everything I'd need, taken all my money out of the bank. I was ready.
And so, I left. Drove off, out of town. At the edge of town, there was a car dealership. I traded in my Mercedes GLA and bought a 2002 Toyota Corolla- cheap, reliable and, above all, inconspicuous.
I knew that there was no going back. They'd be after me for the rest of my life.
But I couldn't rest. I did not become a forensic expert in order to help cover up the truth. I'd studied for many years in order to help bring truth and justice to this world.
I was going to find Dr. Jones- if she was even still alive.
I was going to find out the truth about the corpse.
And I was going to let the public know what the government was hiding from them, even if it killed me.
