Monkey's Paw
She awoke that morning with the hope and promise of a better life. She was both restless and elated. She had been waiting for this opportunity for years. Finally, the day was here and she got out of bed, dressed up in a hurry and dashed out of her cottage.
“Why are we making a stop at this dump of a place?” The sorcerer’s apprentice asked.
“Because someone is paying us handsomely to do so, and we need the souls,” she responded without taking her eyes from the window.
“We’re running low, and we need to take every opportunity we can to fill up,” She continued.
“We’re not that low, unless you know something I don’t,” the apprentice said as he walked to the window and stood in front of the sorcerer.
“Oh goody, here she comes," the sorcerer clapped her hands together, her voice rich with excitement.
“Did you remember to set aside a little branch of the seven leaf clover we harvested from the garden of the gods?” she asked with a sly smile creeping up her lips.
She didn’t wait for an answer, she walked out of the room to greet her guest.
Bailey had no idea what she was about to unleash on her hometown. If she had an inkling of the gravity of her decision, perhaps she would have given it a lot more thought before she went to the sorcerer known for her sly ways.
When they came, it wasn’t just one, two or three, like the villagers were used to, an indication that someone old was being ushered to the afterlife. This time, the crows came in droves. There were so many, they shielded the sun and turned the day to night.
Bailey had gotten her seven leaf clover, and in exchange, her entire village was wiped out.
