The Rope Was Just Replaced
We all look the same in the dark
So why is racism so prevalent on your heart
You act like the color
of my skin is a sin,
and as if my worth is running thin.
My voice, scrutinized for formality
Why do we live this reality
They ask for explanations without words
While all I want is to be heard
Not as my skin,
or where he’s been
But for the person I am within
We all look the same in the dark
So why do you hold your wallet closer, when you walk past in the park
Your fear is showing, though your steps aren’t slowing.
We all look the same in the dark
So who are you to respond
with a racist remark
A thinly veiled threat,
to make me feel inferior
Why judge me for my exterior
We all look the same in the dark
Do not judge me by my race
My life is not yours to debase
My tongue tires of explanations unneeded
Why must my rights be impeded
We all look the same in the dark
Your sideways glances are shots
towards unarmed hope
Lynching never stopped with a rope
It doesn’t seem like racism
ended with a decree
Look behind my skin—
and maybe you’ll see.
