It was late one night. Raining.cold. I was five. My parents said everything was Going to be fine. Parents lie and things were never the same because ………..
We all grabbed our raincoats, and was told we were going for a long ride Mom even brought the dog, who tried to sleep and wanted to go hide
The car windows, were all fogged up and we drew lines and tried to smile Dad’s old Chevy, was plugging hard up those hills and through the long mile
That car was older than Grandma, and dust and rain was mixed together Then the lightning started, and we were scared of this nighttime weather
Miles and empty sign less roads, flew by us as we knew we were all alone Something told me that being five, was old enough to know we were not home
Mom and Dad whispered, empty words and silent wishes to our young self My brother and the dog, just sat there looking at nothing but a small elf
The elf was hanging, on a small hook near the back of the old jalopy car He was dressed in a striped suit, and his face had a grin that went far
He tilted his small head, and spoke to us who were sitting there us three With his low voice he said ‘your parents are not who they seem to be’
His soft voice kept us close together, as those up front cannot even hear We will get away from them tonight, and will go far away from them here
You three must close your eyes, and I will tap your left paw and knee Once this is done, we will shrink and spin ourselves up and away you see
The quick deed was done, and as four tops spinning to somewhere tonight We took one last look down, at their mad faces and knew all was so right
