POEM STARTER
The Thin Veneer
Write a poem which could have this as its title.
The Thin Veneer
Not long ago, it was you and I — two peas in a pod, two socks in a drawer.
Until that day, you gave it a try to fit in with others by telling a lie.
From that moment, we were no more — a pea had been eaten, a sock lost to the floor.
Sudden and sharp, it hurt like hell. You aimed your words with a cruel farewell. You threw the spear, then turned away, causing grey clouds to appear that day.
It took a while, but I’m starting to smile. I no longer cry, though I’m still a bit shy. Trust isn’t free, it was taken from me.
So now I go through the motions alone, hoping to grow beyond what I’ve known.
A mask rests on my face, while I drift through this dreary place. A thin veneer, whilst hoping happiness is near.
