Speed Bump

“Stop the car,” Janelle screamed to Evan, who was driving with the headlights off. Everyone else in the car stared at her in concern as the vehicle slowed to a stop. She immediately unbuckled her seatbelt and put on her red leather jacket to cover up a bit. Evan looked at Janelle with worry. “Where the hell are you going,” he asked, voice trembling ever so slightly. “There’s… something wrong,” Janelle replied, her voice soft but filled with anxiety. “I think… there’s something there… on the road.” She blinked hard and glanced out the window. “Can you come check it out with me?” Evan frowned and nodded gently. Janelle opened the car door on the passenger side and exited the vehicle. Nora, a friend in the backseat, trembled and clung to her sister, Alexa. Alexa hugged her sister and muttered comforting words as Evan exited the car. He and Janelle walked in front of the car, revealing a man. The man had no head… the man was a corpse. He had on a white bloodstained sweater and blue jeans. His body was face down, so the tire marks on his back were visible and very distinct. He stunk bad due to rotting. Janelle gasped and gagged and looked at Evan with an expression of complete fear. Evan merely looked down at the man with an unreadable expression and backed away. “Let’s get back in the car, Janelle,” he said casually and walked back to the car door. Janelle glanced one more time at the corpse and took a deep breath. She then walked to the passenger side and opened the door, her hand shaking intensely. Evan sat down in his seat while Janelle sat in hers. Evan looked at her with a face that said “don’t say a word.” Alexa then spoke up. “So… what was out there?” Janelle exchanged a glance with Evan, who replied simply and even with a soft chuckle. “Just a speed bump.” Janelle flashed a quick fake smile as Evan began to drive over the corpse. He grinned, almost as if he didn’t care about the rotting man below the car. Alexa and Nora chuckled. “Wow. Just a speed bump,” Alexa said. “You sure you didn’t run over someone,” Nora asked jokingly. Janelle looked at Evan, now aware of something no one else was. Evan stayed silent, the grin still plastered across his face. Janelle had always been good at reading people, good enough to know that the very charming friend of hers, the young man driving the car, did, in fact, create a speed bump out of a man. Evan was a murderer.
