POEM STARTER
Write an elegy about the death of something other than a person.
An elegy is a sad poem, traditionally expressing sorrow for someone who has passed away.
Birds
The large oak grew proudly in our childhood yard
We sat under it reading silly books covers hard
Many a picnic and afternoon lunch with our friends
Thinking this summer fun will never have its ends
Counting the nests of happy colorful singing birds
Learning their sounds and doing songs with words
One day while we were in our class in the school
Someone came into the yard and it wasn’t cool
They took all the nests away and made us all sad
Then they came back the next day and we were mad
The big chainsaws cut down our favorite oak tree
Asking our parents as we cried why is this to be
We were to young to understand the death of roots
The loving tree was dying as the owls have no hoots
