Date Night
“Why are we here?” Brie asked, rolling her eyes. Seth had taken her to a restaurant, a restaurant that looked like it was made of diamonds. She squirmed uncomfortably in her tired blue jeans and faded T, surrounded by what looked like wedding dresses and three-piece suits. Even Seth, though he wasn’t quite as shiny as those around them, was wearing clean pants and shirt with a new black leather jacket! Brie had never dreamed of coming to a place like this just to eat, and frankly she was disgusted. These people spent more in a day on food than her family in did in a month. And there were _ten _people in her family! As she looked at the menu, Brie didn’t even know where to begin. There were so many options she wasn’t even sure were food. She picked at the expensive fine-linen table cloth; the small imperfection in the design making her feel a little better. Brie was distracted suddenly, wondering at the need for three different kinds of forks! So when the waiter came, she waited for Seth to rattle off about a dozen expensive-sounding foods, looking hurriedly through the menu for something, anything! She found a small, colorful section, that had a few things she had actually eaten before. She asked for a grilled cheese and a water, blushing slightly when a highly decorated woman looked at her askance. “Ze ‘grilled cheese’ iz only on ze childrenz menu,” the waiter said, looking up from his note-pad confused. “Uh,” Brie said, quickly scanned the menu for anything else that sounded familiar. She ordered tomato soup instead, and sighed in relief as the waiter stalked away. “If you wanted a grilled cheese, we can get you a grilled cheese,” Seth said raising an eyebrow. “No, I just, I’ve never heard of half of the things on this menu!” Brie huffed, flushing in embarrassment. Seth just shrugged, he wasn’t sure what to say to that. “Why did we come here?” She asked again. “Because, you said you were hungry,” he explained, exasperated, “and this place is the cheapest, I didn’t want you to feel out of place.” Brie didn’t know which was more insulting, that this was the cheapest place he could think of, or that he didn’t want her to feel _out of place. _She got up abruptly and walked out, not even bothered to say goodbye. Brie walked to a nearby fast-food place, and ordered a five-dollar burger and a large frie. She ate the greasy food surrounded by people just as grimy and simple as her.
