STORY STARTER

“Am I quiet? Or do you just never try to listen?”

Write a short story which includes a character asking this question.

In One Ear, Out The Other.

How loud do I have to speak

To break down your walls?

How much do I have to clutch your shoulders,

shaking until you understand what I want?

Do I have to stab you,

Cut you wide open,

To infect your wounds with my words?

That’s too much work

For just some simple words,

I wish you would’ve heard.

How much longer do I have to strain,

My now-frail vocal chords?

How much longer should I believe I’m whispering?

Doesn’t talking louder seems like a chore?

Escpecally when my words,

Repeat like a broken record,

Why do you want to throw my thoughts out?

That’s too much work,

For just some understandable words,

I know you have heard.

(Going back to free verse poems 💪🏾, I’m so used to rhyming ones that this feels weird but it’s okay)
