POEM STARTER
Write a poem casually and nonchalantly reflecting on a hugely important event.
What kind of language could portray this tone even when the content is important?
Congrats Grad
So here we are
You finally graduated high school
But let’s be so real
In a year from now it’ll hardly matter
We glamorize doing the bare minimum
We celebrate the last moments as a child
But the day after is the real world
And I promise you
That they’ll eat you alive
They’ll drain your spirit
Remove the stars from your eyes
They kill the dreamers
Just for fun
But I’m not saying don’t continue on
Nobody told me what it was like
The counselors fill you with empty promises
Telling you that there’s only one path to success
But they don’t know you like you do
And that success looks different for everyone
The moment you graduate
They’ll rush you to that crappy job
They don’t even give you a chamce to understand
You’ll wander around confused
You’ll cry on your bed
Only for someone to look at you and say
“That’s just the way it is”
And you don’t know where it all ends
How you were just a child yesterday
But now pay taxes and rent today
But again that’s not what I’m here to say
It’s scary yes
But your future is still bright
And think of all the friends you’ll make
The love you’ll fight for
And maybe even some heartache
So congrats to you
For finally finishing school
But I promise that there’s plenty more
When the next day arrives
And that’s the day you can take a deep breath
To become a new person all over again
