POEM STARTER
Compose a poem centred around the theme of 'the one that got away'.
Will I See Your Heart Again?
It was so bright when the hearts where young, fearless and carefree. A time when they gave love freely and were gentle and kind. Though, the years made life hard and so light grew dim and thier beats grew heavy and weary from exhaustion. Neither heart with the knowledge to see, to hear, to fix it. Neither heart fearless enough to reach for the other.
Space, it expanded over time. Walls went up. Darkness followed. Blinded and frozen in space. Two heart beats thumped and ached and longed to meet again. Yet the eyes and minds where helplessly senseless.
Why did it have to be so cold. A shiver, a sigh, a longing. A misguided settling into silence. Waiting.
There is a room that exists where light never touches, a window here, a window over there, yet it remains a complete inky void within. A place of pain, yearning. If the walls are real they must be thick, for the wailing within goes unnoticed.
There are still smiles and work and leisure and holidays yet the room remains and the two heart beats thump longing to be together again. But lost in darkness.
Some hearts put themselves there. Some find suddenly they have arrived there. Others go willingly to hide. All are lost, all will suffer.
The sound of a familiar thumping heart echos and bounces in the darkness. With outstretched hands each heart waits, hoping to feel that familiar heart once again. Searching through the darkness, they sit in silence. Each hoping the other knew what to do.
A sudden crack. The windows shatter and a flurry of wind rushes and whips at the space. Utter panic, utter chaos, racing hearts. The thump thump thumping of the beating hearts mix and echo and disorients. The only option is the windows. Self preservation.
Will the worlds on the other side of the window connect? When the two hearts exit one there the other over here, will they both be standing in the same field? Where after some time, a moment of gathering themselves and tools, they will find they can walk around this box to the familiar, yet brighter heart on the other side. One holding wood the other tools, ready to fumble exposed in the raw light. Where they will rebuild a new brighter space. A safe place to grow and learn together.
Or will there be a journey through the woods? Stumbling and gaining strength, building endurance, finding connection within themselves, to then at some point, find that other now stronger familiar heart in a field of sunflowers?
Or will they never beat together again? Will the hearts go on? Will that connnection before the darkness settled in be all that they could grow together… will that love be lost and leave behind a heavy beating heart… will that familiar heart be the one that got away?
