WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Frankie Famighetti

Create a conversation that takes place within a human body.

It can be between cells, organs, or anything real or imagined within the body.

The Head, The Brain, And The Gut.

“Here we go again,” the brain broke the days silence.

“And just when I was beginning to feel better…” The gut had had a horrible stomach ache only a few days prior and was praying the organs would remain as such just until he felt more like himself.

“Shh,” the heart interjected, “I think we should go for it!”

“Well of course you think that,” the brain said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” The heart replied, her rhythm taking on an angered beat.

The gut stayed quiet, deciding it best not to comment.

“Ever since you heard that stupid ‘Follow your heart’ stuff, you think you’re the boss around here.”

“Well, aren’t I?” This was not a question.

The gut prepared himself for the argument of a lifetime. In fact, he was surprised it hadn’t happened earlier. Everytime the brain attempted to make a decision, the heart always had to take the reigns simply because people supposedly followed their “hearts” more than their “head.” Well, what about the gut? Where was he in any of this? The only times he had a say was when he was bloated and sickly. They should’ve counted themselves lucky.

The brain scoffed. “Don’t give me a headache. This is obviously a terrible idea, you must realize that.”

“I don’t know, I think it’s kinda romantic.” The hearts color grew and beat faster.

“I’ve gotta agree with the brain on this one,” the gut finally spoke up. “I’m not feeling too good about this.”

“You _never _feel good.” The heart said pointedly.

“Well, where am I in all this? Maybe I should be the boss around here—after all, it’s not just you that has a saying. People are also supposed to ‘Follow their guts.’” The gut made a very strong argument.

“You all are idiots,” the brain said. “Without me, neither of you could function. I provide you with the ability to speak, to think. All you are is because of me! There is no following your heart or following your gut, because say someone said they had, they’d have just been thinking logically or stupidly!”

Or so he thought.

There was a moment of silence.

A bliss quietness that sweeped through every inch of the interior.

Something the heart had to break. “You’re—“

“No, I am not wrong!” The brain interrupted, knowing full well what the heart was to say next. “Now, I say no. This is horrible decision and one that I decree shall not be followed through. We will choose the safer option this time.”

All them stopped speaking at the same time to hear the voice box form words.

“Great,” the gut said.

The heart sighed.

“We’ve given this body chest pain, a headache, and a queasy stomach. I think we’ve done enough.”

Finally they all came to an agreement.. they would not converse any further— for a while. At least until the body felt better and the three of them cooled down, even though they all had more to say.
