WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by lanie

Write a story, poem, or paragraph, personifying a creaky floorboard in an old house.

Remember this doesn't mean you have to write from its perspective, but give it human characteristics.

Squeaky

Ever since I was delivered here, I have watched the feet stomp across me. I have watched children play, students crazily study, and I have watched dreams come true. I have been here for many years, since this place has opened. The elderly man who owns the place, comes in every morning to open up. He unlocks the big glass doors with a big friendly smile everyday. One that shows his passion and his dedication to his store. I’ve watched him dream almost die when there weren’t enough customers coming to the store. And I’ve watched him carefully create new menus and cook new dishes.

My favorite feet to watch would be the older lady. I believe the older lady is married to the older man, or if not, they should be. They seem to take good care of eachother and I personally think they are perfect together. I also like the older lady because she seems to take good care of the building. While the older man is making food, the older lady dusts and sweeps us.

Lately I have been hearing the couple talk about the noises I have been making. I am not sure when it started or how it started. But recently I have been making a loud squeek when people walk over me. It is quite embarrassing how people look at me after I emit the sound. I wish that I could fix it before the sound becomes louder, but I am not quite sure how I would prevent this.

The couple says that the squeaky sound adds charm to the restaurant. They say it adds to the age of the building and that it gives it character. If loud, distracting noises add charm to a building, I don’t know what couldn’t! I can tell the customers mind from the looks the give me. As the customers walk over me, the give me a surprised look. One that clearly tells me, they don’t welcome the noise. This leaves me deeply embarrassed and surprised by myself.

My favorite reaction would be from the children in the restaurant. As they walk over me they let out the happiest giggle. Sometimes they also blame eachother for the noise.
