The Doll

I watch as the world passes on as I sit and watch through the eyes of a doll

The shelves now covered in dust

Many pass by and admire saying “What a wonderful life it must be, to be placed high above it all”

But what they do not see is the broken pieces that rest beneath her

How could they, for they only wish to see her beauty. What they don’t know is what they cannot see

Her legs have chipped away with time

Her arms broken beyond repair

She can no longer sit up right without tilting to a side

Her once golden hair now covered in dust

The paint on her porcelain skin fading away

She stares out the window for that’s all she has left

Dreaming of the day that’s never to come

Alone high above it all she rests as she begins to deteriorate. She watches them from high above, the smiles on their faces. Unaware of how utterly lonely is her existence

But why should that matter they must say “She is a beautiful doll. What more could she want?”

But of course she wants more. Desperately wanting to escape her mind as she sits in complete solitude.

People gaze at her in awe and envy what she has

But they will never know loneliness like hers because all anyone can see is a beautiful doll

And all she will ever hear them say is “What a wonderful life it must be”

So she convinces herself of this truth and lays her dreams to rest alongside her broken parts

The shelf on which she sits on now a graveyard

A reminder of the freedom she’s lost as she says to herself. “This is what a wonderful life must be. I am happy” with this she stares out the window. A single tear rolls down her face as she utters one last time “I am happy”
