WRITING OBSTACLE

Create a dialogue scene between an artist and their muse.

Angel Of Music

(based off of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of “The Phantom of the Opera”, written in the style of a stageplay)

**Scene**: Christine’s dressing room at the Opera Populaire. France, 1876.

_Christine and Meg enter Christine’s dressing room, out of breath from rehearsal. Christine sits in the chair in front of her vanity, Meg walking across the room to sit on the edge of Christine’s bed to take off her pointe shoes. _

Meg: _(annoyed_) Goodness! I do not understand why our rehearsals must last that long. My ankles are becoming quite sore.

Christine: _(seemingly distracted)_ If you ask me I believe Senora Carlotta needs the rehearsals.

Meg: Christine! Why ever would you say such a thing? It is unlike you to be so impolite!

Christine: I apologize, I’m not sure what came over me.

_Christine stands up and walks over to Meg, taking a seat next to her and grabbing her hands._

Meg: _(worried)_ Christine are you alright? You haven’t been quite yourself lately.

Christine: Yes, well. _(she exhales)_ Things have been somewhat strange as of late.

Meg: Well? What is strange?

Christine: I don’t know how to describe it, _(she pauses, looking around the room)_ the air, it’s changed. It feels more clear, like something is trying to draw me in, but I can’t put my finger on it.

Meg: Well we must not fret on what we cannot explain. We need to go over the ballet in act three. (_under her breath as she gets up to walk towards the door) _Je refuse que ma mère soit contrariée par ma danse_ (I refuse to have mother be upset with my dancing)_

_Meg exits SL through the door of the dressing room. Christine gets up and moves back to sit at her vanity, fussing with her hair. _

Phantom: _(from behind the mirror, in a singsong tone)_ Christine.

Christine: (_frantically)_ Angel, is that you that I hear?

Phantom: _(behind the mirror)_ Yes, it is your Angel of Music.

Christine: Why have you come here Angel? I am just a ballet girl.

Phantom: Oh but you are much more than a ballet girl Christine, you have a gift. How long will it take you to realise that?

Christine: Yes I know, my apologies. It is still just hard to wrap my head around.

Phantom: I know it is chérie.

_Meg comes up behind the door and knocks three times._

Meg: _(without entering the room)_ Christine? Who are you speaking to? Come out please, we must rehearse.

Christine: I will be out in a moment!

Meg leaves.

Christine: I apologize Angel, I must go.

Phantom: Don’t fret, we will speak again before you know it.

Christine: I look forward to it always. (_smiling at the mirror_)

_Christine gets up, grabs the pointe shoes off the bed, and exits SL through the door. The Phantom enters SR, seemingly through the wall, and places a red rose on the vanity_.
