POEM STARTER
Write an elegy about the death of something other than a person.
An elegy is a sad poem, traditionally expressing sorrow for someone who has passed away.
My Old Self
I remember when I was younger
All I used to do was just have fun
Doing whatever
From always playing with toys
Staying up late watching cartoons
Watching random videos
Playing video games all day, all night
Only thinking about just this or just that
Just consuming one thing after the other
So blissfully and mindlessly
Thinking that it will always be this way
Then, you get older
You start to realize somethings
How all this fun and wonder becomes less
How all of these things don’t really matter
How life doesn’t entertain, just exists
How work gets much harder, more frequent
You start to know more about life
About how you’re not that “special”
How time will pass with you or without you
Life will progress with you or without you
How you start to not have as much fun anymore
But to do what feels important
Getting a family
Getting a job
Getting a purpose
Getting a life
And so, I sit down
Feeling down
Over the death of a much more youthful
Much more joyous
Much more excited
Much more blissfully unaware
Much more fun little boy I used to be
Slowly giving birth to a much wiser
Much more controlled
Much more chill
Much more experienced
Much more fulfilled
Much more meaningful man I will be
