STORY STARTER

Submitted by Katelyn Jane

A life force from another planet has just translated the first piece of human writing. Write a story about what they discovered.

Order Of The Sigil: Who’s afraid

There were cupcakes in the Farkas Solutions break room. Not the usual generic supermarket offerings with dried out frosting, these were fresh baked homemade treats dipped in rainbow sprinkles. A yellow post it stated: enjoy. In a shark-like frenzy, these staff swarmed the break room. Maintenance swept up the yellow crumbs.

“Does an idea ever just circle in your head?” Jim said, around his second cupcake.

“Like a toilet bowl, my guy. Your brain is like a toilet,” Vic said, licking his fingers.

“Nah I’m serious. Like what if like an alien came down and beamed up the first story mankind ever wrote. What would ET think of us?”

Jim and Vic reached for cupcakes. Maintenance emptied the trash can.

“Dude if a Klingon read the first story mankind, he’d be blown away. Men went from recording grain amounts to complex narratives. We jumped my guy with our big brains we jumped intellectually. Aliens would be impressed with us. That’s what we’re going to do with our A.I. Once we launch our ghostwriting app, we are going to blow the universe’s mind!” Vic said arms, mimicking his head exploding.

“Epic of Gilgamesh is one of the earliest recorded works. Dating back to 2000 BCE. Written stories evolved over centuries over cultures. No jumping idiots,” the cleaning lady mumbled.

Laughing and fake exploding, Jim and Vic walked out of the break room. The cleaning lady dropped the broom and straightened. The last bug was set.

“Dickens, how’s it sounding?” Kennedy said into the mic up her sleeve.

“A okay milady.”

“I’m out and don’t call me lady,” Kennedy said.
