Saving Jessica

The brilliant blue sky was full of white fluffy clouds. The sun was shining bright, but it wasn’t’t too hot. If I hadn’t been fighting my arch nemesis, this probably would have been the perfect day for a picnic in the park with Jessica. Oh my beautiful Jessica, I’ll have to make it up to you another day. We’re definitely going to have to have a romantic picnic tomorrow. Even if it rains, we could have it in our living room. I’ll just have to make sure I cook all your favorites.

Crash! A tree zooms by my head, almost hitting me. I almost daydreamed myself into an eternal sleep. Then I would never get to have a picnic with Jessica. Fighting my archenemies needed more focus than I wanted to give it right now, but if I didn’t focus, she would win.

I push Jessica to the back of my mind and block out everything but the villain in front of me. Trees and cars are thrown my way, leaving more and more wreckage as I dodge out of the way. This was going to be a massive cost for the city to clean up, but there wasn’t really much more I could do. My nemesis was currently supercharged with some formula that made her way stronger than normal. So now, instead of stopping her with ease like normal, I’m over her hopping around hoping that this isn’t a permanent strength increase.

I had called for backup, but they were taking forever to show up. [villain name] was starting to become more wreckless with her attacks. They were starting to become less accurate and were getting close to their underlings. That’s one of the reasons I never brought anyone weaker than me into a fight. i feel like it would suck if I accidentally caused injury to my own people, but the bad guys, never seemed to care about that.

That was the exact thing that was happening to [villain name’s] underlings. They were becoming victims to their boss’s attacks. So now, I was doing my best to dodge attacks and save them from the onslaught of attacks. [Villain name] seemed t be catching onto this, and started attacking her people more. Car after car was thrown at her own people, and it was getting hard to keep up.

Then it happened, I didn’t see the underling in the blue and pink outfit until it was too late. A tree went right towards them and one of it’s branches impaled the poor girl. I rushed to her, trying to see if I could help. The tree limb was lodged deep in her chest, poking all the way through. She started coughing and choking on her own blood so I removed her mask and felt my world shatter.

In front of me, bleeding out, was my Jessica. She was the light of my life and now I was witnessing her last moments. As I reached my hand out to caress her cheek, she flinched and started struggling to swat my hand away. For once, my suit felt too tight and it felt like a lifetime passed before I could yank off my mask. The look of disbelief on her face was soon washed away by the worst type of rain ever. Tears of sadness and everything else flooded from both or eyes.

“I was planning a picnic for us,” I whispered as I moved to hold her in my arms as best as I could.

“I’m sorry,” she rasped in between coughs.

“I love you, hole punch,” I say completely sobbing now, hoping she understands. There isn’t enough time in thee world to tell her everything. I just hope she understands.

“Hole Punch,” she says after another cough. With a smile on her face, she takes a hacking last breath and closes her eyes.

The next thing I remember is [hero name] dragging me to my feet. Apparently my backup had shown up after all. They debriefed me later, and updated me on how the rest of the fight went. They had shown up right after Jessica’s injury and managed to defeat the enemy while I had my last moment with her. [ Hero name] helped me get the tree off of Jessica and kept the reporters away while I carried her off into the sunset one last time.
