POEM STARTER
Compose a poem about false awakenings.
A false awakening is when you wake up within your own dream. Those who experience false awakenings do not realise they’ve woken up inside another dream.
Dredreamam
I fall from the rooftop and think that I am dying,
But before I hit the ground I realise I am flying.
I bite the moon, it tastes of cheese,
I use a spoon, and say more please,
I eat until I become a cow, you may think I’m lying.
I moo my way across the road to the butcher shop,
A red light here I know means go and never means to stop,
I sit and wait, a car zooms near,
I am irate, and full of fear,
It hits me and I fall to the floor with a hard plop.
I wake up with a jolt in my bed,
Replay the dream in my head.
Like water through my fingers,
No details stay to linger.
Then I find myself frozen in place.
Like my body is wrapped in a brace.
A foreboding sense of doom.
Creeps in throughout the room.
It fills me with such dread.
But I can’t move from my bed.
When it all feels like too much.
Like my chest is being crushed.
I wake up.
This time for real.
I think.
