WRITING OBSTACLE

Create a character who fits a stereotype in every aspect except one. Reveal this aspect of them towards the end of the story.

Goth Girl

Bella was a typical goth girl. She wore all-black leather everyday. Even in the summer, Bella refused to change her fashion. She wore fishnets on her arms and legs. Bella’s skin was a sickly pale, and her lips were blood red.

She was a modern day Snow White, without the innocence to her. Bella didn’t talk to a lot of people in her high school, but it wasn’t like she wanted to. If life wanted her to listen to The Cure alone at the lunch table, so be it. Bella’s laptop was covered in anti-capitalist, anti-fascist, racial equality, and LGBT stickers. She had posters of these beliefs in her backpack, ready to show them off at the latest protest.

Many boys found Bella’s face and figure to be beautiful, and frequently wished she would be their girlfriend. Despite that, she never found boys attractive in any way. In her backpack, Bella had a notebook with all her greatest doodles. They were usually skulls, blood, and tears, but they were made with such precision for art she made while bored in class. Bella rarely spoke a word.

When she did speak, she sounded like Helena Bonham Carter in a Tim Burton movie, despite not being British. There wasn’t a point in her life where Bella wasn’t Wednesday Adams. Her childhood photos showed her wearing the same black, even a few photos of her having a vampire phase instead of a princess phase. Bella loved classical music, to the point it was her main motivation to learn how to play both the piano and the violin. The music she played was diverse, from depressing to triumphant, from blues to gospel.

Whatever instrument she played, her parents were always close to her. They cleared as they saw how much Bella improved. Both of Bella’s parents were hippies, wearing bright clothes and having pacifist views. Despite that, they never thought their daughter was an oddity. Instead, Bella’s parents encouraged her.

They were the brightest light in her life
