WRITING OBSTACLE

Your character sees everything in black and white. One day, they see but one colour in a world of monochrome. Describe their experience of this colour.

It could be a red balloon or a blue bird - this is a good way to really get into vivid and metaphorical descriptions!

His Eyes.. <3

Everything in my life had been black and white. Always has been. Pallad and sad. And that’s how I’d constantly see the world, too. Everybody just a bland copy of someone else.

Really, I can’t even understand the concept of ‘color.’ Achromatopsia, is what they call it. A birth defect. It doesn’t matter though.

I don’t like people. I never have. They are all just horrid humans, I could never love them. Except my best friend, Leo. He means the world to me. And for one specific reason only.

3 years back, I was hanging out with him. We were walking around the park after soccer practice, teasing and playfully speaking to each other.

“Simon!! Seriously, when are you ever gonna get a grip!” He giggled, playfully punching my shoulder.

“Shut up..” I hummed, holding back a small smile. He was the only one who could make me smile like that. He made me feel.. alive.

We walked at the border of the soccer field, when BAM.. the ball hit me straight in the head. I fell onto the ground, I couldn’t remember what had happened after that. All I remember is seeing.. something different. Leo kneeled next to me, trying to shake my body awake.

I saw his eyes. They were different than before. I looked around briefly- so was the grass. But his eyes.. they were so beautiful. If I remembered correctly, they were green.

That has been my favorite color. Was it because it was the only color I could see? Yes, but also the color of his eyes. His eyes are so adorable, the hue of them made me feel things I know I shouldn’t. But gods, everyday I’m reminded of how beautiful he is..

I cant tell him how I feel though. He has a girlfriend. A pretty one too. But her eyes aren’t the same. They aren’t pretty, and filled with wonder like his was.

The condition in which a person can only see things in black and white or in shades of gray is called achromatopsia
