POEM STARTER
Write a poem about taking a gamble.
Your interpretation can include the classic ideas associated with gambling, or something more metaphorical.
The Wager
I stood where shadows blur the line,
Where fate and choice entwine and twine—
A table carved from time and doubt,
With silence thick, and stars burned out.
A single chip clutched in my hand,
The weight of worlds I couldn't plan.
The dealer smiled with knowing eyes,
As if she'd seen all loss and lies.
This wasn't cards or dice or wheel,
But something deeper—sharp and real.
A risk of self, a dare of soul,
To trade the part and reach the whole.
To love again despite the scar,
To chase a dream that sleeps afar.
To write a truth no eyes have read,
To speak the words, I’ve left unsaid.
The rules were few: no turning back,
No aces stashed, no exit track.
Just one small breath before the fall,
And hope to rise—or not at all.
I tossed my fear into the night,
And felt the dark lean into light.
For every gamble, win or lose,
Becomes the life we dare to choose.
