One day, a door appeared on the wall.

The backside of the college has always seemed to be littered with art - and for a while that’s what we thought it was.

A purple door that looked more like a cartoon than some of the imagery it covered. On the paint was stencilled a few words;

THE DOOR OF DREAMS.

It became somewhat popular for a time as kids would pose as if opening it and take pictures.

I was a janitor that spent my lunches eating outside and scrolling on my phone, and one day I got an order to paint over half of the wall just before summer.

I got some buckets of white paint, and set off at the beginning of the next day to get started.

The paint was thin, and dribbled a bit as I passed it over the wall. I thought about what the next group of art students would paint here.

Maybe that’s why I didn’t see the purple door open.

The paint brush left a puddle on the floor as I stared.

It had been closed this morning… maybe some kids had come whilst my back was turned and tried to trick me.

I ran the brush over the open door and almost wet myself as the door fully opened, taking my paint roller with it.

There was a real place behind the purple door, and before I could understand what I was seeing, I had stepped over the threshold.

The purple door shut behind me, and I didn’t even notice.
