STORY STARTER
“I’ve never met anyone like you before!”
“You should be grateful for that.”
Write a story that contains this section of dialogue. Think about who your characters are, and the nature of this exchange.
It’s Not Everyday I Meet Someone Like U.
(I couldn’t fully spell you in the title, too many letters. I hope you enjoy my take on this prompt!! I might change the pov to third person, and give the characters actual names one day but I don’t know yet.)
I smiled brightly, “I never met anyone like you before!” I said happily to the man across from me.
He looked at me as I said those words, something changed in his expression, it was subtle.
He cut into his steak before speaking, “You should be grateful for that.” He responded, his tone smooth as always, I tilted my head slightly confusion etched on my features.
“…what’s that supposed to mean?” I questioned, smile slowly faltering.
“…nothing, nothing, my dear..” he said, waving a dismissive hand, playing off his statement as a joke. “It was a joke.” He added.
‘If only they knew...’ He thought as he chewed the piece of steak.
I chuckled awkwardly, “Such a jokester, you are.” I teased, eating a bite of my spaghetti. He smiled slightly.
“I know…I thought about being a comedian, one day.” He teased back. I smiled widely.
“I’d be at every one of your shows,” I said.
He put a hand on his heart, “Well, aren’t you just a sweetheart..” he said, leaning forward before settling back in his seat.
I laughed.
The rest of the evening went great, we laughed, we danced on the dance floor that the restaurant had.
Then we arrived at my home as night fell.
“I had fun tonight,” I said, grinning happily.
His smile didn’t meet his eyes this time, he looked at me, like he was trying to memorize every feature. “I did too.” He said, his voice low.
“Is something wrong?” I asked, and he shook his head.
“Nothing for you to worry about, Darling.” He started, looking off in the distance before looking at my face again.
“This may be the last you see me for a long time.” He said suddenly, my eyes widened.
“What-“I started to ask, he put a hand on the side of my face, closing the distance between us, kissing my temple gently in a comforting manner.
“Just know, I love you very much. I’ll hold you dear to my heart, always.” He said, pulling away, taking a step back.
“Was it something I did, what’s going on?” I asked, worried.
“No, you didn’t do anything. It’s what I did.” He said, before turning away and walking to his car, driving off, I swore I saw a frown on his face but the car was too quick for me to tell..
My eyebrows furrowed as I stood there, eyes growing glossy.
Before I said anything, two pairs of footsteps approached. “Excuse me?” A female asked from behind me, and I turned.
It was an officer with her partner, both having serious expressions.
“…yes?” I asked.
“Have you seen this man?” She asked, holding up a picture for me to look at.
It was him.
He was wanted by authorities?!
“May I ask…why?” I questioned.
The other officer spoke up, “he killed two people tonight then fled.” He said suddenly.
My eyes widened. “Oh god-“I started.
“I haven’t seen him,” I said.
I should tell but…
I couldn’t get myself to do so.
This does explain why he kept his suit jacket buttoned up and kept holding on to it like his life depended on it.
The officers nodded, sighing almost sounding defeated, “Alright..thanks for your time, hun. Be safe.” The female officer said, the male nodded in farewell, and they both turned and walked off.
How was one supposed to process this news?
The one they thought was their forever…killed people.
I was in disbelief and shock as I walked inside my house after a second of standing there..
I shouldn’t have lied to the police either.
I sighed heavily, wiping my eyes.
Why would he even do this?
So many unanswered questions are running through my mind.
(Hopefully this was alright! Much love!!)
