WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Frankie Famighetti

Create an origin story for a common saying, such as 'break the ice' or 'once in a blue moon'.

Your story should explain how this expression came to be, and why it means what it does.

Half Full Glass

Anastasia sets a half empty glass in front of me.

I look up at her with a raised eyebrow.

"Is this glass half full or half empty?"

My brows furrow. "What?"

"Half full or half empty?"

"It’s half empty-"

"Wrong answer!" Anastasia waterweaves a small tentacle out of the glass and slaps me in the face with it.

"Ouch." I glare at her. It didn’t hurt. "No it’s not. It’s half empty-"

She slaps me again.

"Okay, are you going to-"

"The right answer-!" she cuts me off. "Is half full."

I look at her in confusion before the realisation dawns on me. I roll my eyes and sigh, leaning back in my chair and crossing my arms. "Bubbles, don’t tell me this is going to be one of those life lessons-"

"Just like life!"

"And it’s going to be one of those life lessons," I nod to myself.

"Life is half full, Eiran! And you," she points at me dramatically. My lip twitches upwards. She is so dramatic sometimes. "Just need to see that! You need to stop being pessimistic and start looking at the world in a better view."

"Sorry I don’t see the world in rose coloured glasses like you," I reply dryly.

She slaps me again.

"Can you stop?"

"No. Anyway, all is not lost in this war. We can still win. If we just get Alric-"

"We are not getting Alric."

Alric is the prince of the enemy kingdom, our childhood best friend.

"What’s the worst that could happen?"

"I don’t know, Anastasia. Maybe we could be lead into a trap?"

"Glass half full," she lifts up the glass for a moment before setting it back down.

"Rose coured glasses."

She slaps me with a water tentacle again.

"Okay, that’s it," I grab it and drink it. "There. Now it really is empty."

Anastasia rolls her eyes and crosses her arms. "Okay, Eiran? Alric is the only way we can save my kingdom."

"It’s too risky." I stand up. "We’re not doing it." I walk out of our bedroom.
