Calculate Betrayal
It began on a chilly Liverpool evening when a discreet message landed in the hands of a professional killer known only by his code name, Ash. The organisation that employed him had received a meticulous order: to terminate a family man whose indiscretions had stirred more than just domestic strife. The order had come, rather unusually, from his wife—a woman so incensed by her husband’s brazen affair with one of his university students that she’d chosen to engineer his end. In her eyes, fate had conspired against him; it was, after all, the victim’s own fault for stepping out of line.
A week later, under the low hum of a lamplit back alley in central Liverpool, Ash met the wife face-to-face. Dressed in a tailored coat that concealed a repertoire of lethal precision, he eschewed pleasantries. As she offered an elaborate greeting, he interrupted with a dry smile and declared,
“Let’s skip the pleasantries, shall we? You and I both know we’re not her for small talk.”
Her eyes narrowed in a blend of admiration and cold resolve. The plan was simple: execute a hit that, executed flawlessly, would be ruled an ‘accidental death’ by the insurance experts, enabling her to claim a tidy payout. Yet fate, as it so often did, had twists in store.
Before the fateful night, an unexpected complication arose. The husband, desperate and shamed by his misdeeds, had reached out with a bribe—a generous sum meant to overturn the order he was determined to escape. However, Ash was a man of principle and reputation. With measured calm, he replied that accepting an alternate payment would upend the strict “Ethics and Code of Conduct” governing his organisation. His reasoning was unyielding: if he were to compromise his standards, the balance between order and lawlessness would crumble. Accepting the husband’s offer wasn’t merely a personal lapse—it was a risk that would have plunged the underworld into chaos. In that moment, it was clear that the victim’s own indiscretions had sown the seeds of his downfall.
Once assurances were gleaned from the organisation’s rigorous investigation, the hit was set in motion. With the cold efficiency of a well-oiled machine, Ash orchestrated the demise of the husband. Every detail was accounted for—from the timed dispatch to the elimination of any evidence, leaving behind nothing but the echo of consequences. As the deed was done, it was widely accepted in hushed circles that the tragedy was, ultimately, the family man’s own fault for leading a double life.
In the aftermath, the wife’s plan appeared to be an unmitigated success. The insurance company, convinced by the impeccable staging, declared the death accidental, and before long, a generous sum was wired into her bank account. For a fleeting moment, she savoured the notion of financial independence—a fresh start unburdened by cruelty and betrayal. It was a triumph of cunning over circumstance, a victory that promised to rewrite her future.
Yet, as days turned into quiet nights in her newly acquired seaside flat, a shocking twist emerged. One drizzly evening, as she reviewed the documents and relished the newfound security of her wealth, a cryptic letter arrived by post. The envelope bore no return address, only a single line typed in stark black:
“Not everything is as it appears.”
Inside, detailed evidence suggested that a grave error had been made. The documents revealed that the order had been logged under a mistaken identification—the intended target was not her adulterous husband but his identical twin, a man whose existence had been kept secret and whose whereabouts were unknown. The organisation, which prided itself on thorough investigations, had allowed a fatal clerical oversight to occur. Suddenly, the entire neat façade of the insurance payout was in jeopardy. The mortgage on her new life now carried the dark stain of a bungled operation, and whispers began to circulate that the authorities were closing in on the mysterious circumstances behind the death.
In that moment of revelation, the wife realised that her seemingly perfect plan had been built on a foundation of lies and errors. Her happily anticipated future, secured by what she believed was a well-deserved insurance windfall, now teetered on the edge of collapse. The shocking twist left her with a bitter truth: in the world of calculated betrayals, even a flawless scheme may harbour a fatal flaw waiting to upend everything.
