Secrets
I couldn’t believed my parents had dragged me to spend the entirety of my winter break in the middle of the woods. It was apparently to spend more “family time together”, but the motel was very spread out—each room a cabin— that we only saw each other for meals. It was a relief for me. I stayed all of my time in the library or cafeteria, intensively reviewing my notes. I had entered a writing competition a few weeks ago, with the due date being in two days, which is another reason why I was mad to be here. Suddenly, as I was trying to rephrase my last paragraph, my mom sends me a text saying that there’s a blizzard coming very fast towards us and the motel instructed all guests to be in the main cabin. As I got there, I saw they had divided the cabin into sections, with many blankets and pillows on the floor for each family. As I sat down my mom told me the blizzard outside had gotten terrible and we would have to expand our stay.. at this, I froze, thinking about my competition that would happen in two days. My mom looked at me with comforting eyes and told me my story was incredible. My mom had been always the positive in our family, and as much as I wanted to believe her, I still couldn’t process what she had said moments ago. Then, looking at me with sorrowful eyes, she pulled out a book from my backpack and started reading in order to find new compliments for my writing. A beat passed and as she dropped the book, I loooked at her, only to realize it wasn’t my story book she had grabbed as that was still in my hand, but my diary. My mother dropped the notebook and looked at me with a deep hurtful and angry expression as she said whispered “You are pregnant? But you’re only 13..”
