STORY STARTER
Write a statement from a criminal who is on trial for a murder they feel no remorse for.
Consider why this character doesn't regret their actions.
She Started It
Any feedback is appreciated, I haven’t written much of this topic, but love to experiment.
The ticking of the old clock is all that occupies the quiet courtroom. The silence is loud. Too loud.
The courtroom smells of cologne and an obnoxious amount of perfume. Rich people. I could care less, this is a waste of time.
I sit before the many that surround me, yet I’ve never felt so alone.
My best friend’s family sits across me, their eyes glassy with tears. Her father’s expression is different from the rest, a determined expression wiped across his face. His fists clenched, knuckles turning white.
I’ve done something very bad. Oh yes, I know it. I killed her.
Took her innocent life.
But I would never, ever take back my actions. I would never in this life regret what I did.
Because she wasn’t innocent. And it was only a matter of time before people found out.
I don’t care if it’s the last thing I do. If it’s the last thing I say. I will reveal the truth.
She attacked me first.
She was my best friend, yet her words drove themselves into my chest before my knife reached hers.
The things she said…if only they knew.
It was just like when we were kids. “She started the fight,” one of us would yell. The other countered “No! She did!”
And I broke the everlasting silence between myself and the court, probably causing an uproar from her scarred family.
A smirk washed across my face. “She started it,” I whispered, but I knew everyone could hear it.
But this time, she really did start it. And I was the one to end it. I ended her life.
