“… now for the flowers we’re going to do…” My mind drifted off as I sleepily rested my elbow on the table, the planner still babbling about table settings and flowers.

I wasn’t completely sure why Maximillian and I had been told to come to this meeting, it was just the planner and mother telling them what they were doing for my wedding.

What should’ve been my special day.

I snapped awake as Maximillian nudged me with his arm, eyes wide. Mother was staring at me, as if expecting an answer.

“Oh, um, yes…?” I answered, trying my best to sound like I knew what I was doing.

The planner took that answer after a moment and turned to mother again.

That was close.

I cleared my throat and reached for Maximillian’s hand, pulling myself up and dragging him with me. “Max and I are going to take a private moment, if you don’t mind,” I said.

I tried not to notice my mother’s disapproving stare as I walked out the door and across the street.

I released his hand as they turned a corner. “Sorry about that. I just needed…” “A breath?” Maximillian concluded for me.

I sighed. “Yeah.” We walked in silence for a few moments.

It wasn’t that Max was a bad guy, we just didn’t feel that way about each other. It was more like… a business partner's relationship. We both knew we had a duty.

When I was young I thought people married for love. I don’t know how I could be so stupid as to believe something like that now.

Marriage isn’t about love, it’s about duty, and promise.

And I knew I had to fulfill mine.
