WRITING OBSTACLE
Choose a major issue going on in the world today. Write a story that symbolises this idea on a personal level between two characters.
Consider how you will allude to the wider global issue while keeping your story intimate and relatable.
The Freezer Killer
While growing up Dominic was told he could be whatever he wanted. As long as he tried hard and focused on what was right. He believed this until his parents disappeared one day.
“Hey Dom, have you checked the news recently?” Ruby asked as she was coming into work. “No, what is it?” He replied as he hit send on another monotonous email. As he turned to look his eyes caught the heading of the article
|Mysterious Disappearances of the Freezer Killer|
“Do you think this has anything to do with your parents?” Ruby urged before he could even start reading the actual article. He never thought of this as a murder, let alone a full missing person. Knowing they never leave home without telling him, in their old age, where they were going of course was a little worrying . “I’m not sure, send me that article so I can read it!” He said turning back to his desk.
The article tells about the latest in the Freezer killers escapades. It goes on about how each victim was taken from their home or work, without any explanation. The killer had the same motive it seem however. They killer only stocked “unsavory” areas. Whatever that meant, who’s to say what’s unsavory.
Dominic walked back over to Ruby and said “I think it may be connected, the other victims live in the same area as my parents”. He said this not fully convinced that these actually lined up. Ruby responded with “Your parents live on THAT side of town?”. This caught Dominic off guard, what was that supposed to mean? “My parents living on that side of town doesn’t really have anything to do with this Ruby.” He replied trying to hide the anger bubbling up. His parents don’t live on the best side of town but they doesn’t mean they deserved to be taken by some named monster named after ice.
Ruby looked at him, surprised. “I didn’t mean anything by it Dom. We gotta trust our system in doing the right thing to catch this criminal.” After she said this she turned back around in her chair and got back to work. Like nothing happened. This upset Dom, but he knew the conversation was over, why would someone who isn’t effected by this issue care about how it’s effecting him?
Would the system actually be able to catch the killer? Or would it let another crime go unpunished and unsolved because of the “unsavory” area it’s taking part in?
