POEM STARTER
Submitted by Susan Santizo
Write a poem about a place which makes you feel nostalgic.
You can write in any style or genre, but keep this as the central theme.
There’s No Place Like Home
Randolph
Deadlines, client meetings
Lunch breaks spent at restaurants
Meals shared with colleagues
Hozier doing sound check on
A hot summer afternoon
Tourists crossing the street
Cyndi Lauper standing by
Waiting for the same
Streetlight to turn green
Greenwood
A child is dead, shot
Flowers, toys
stuffed animals
Candles, a shrine
Solemn faces, downcast
Hush whispers, silent cries
Lakeshore
Solo tranquil strolls
Strewn with serenity
Walks with friends
Painted with laughter
Bike rides, scooter rides
Along the blue lake
Beach days, spring days
The shore is open to all
Avenue
Shops, shops, shops
Rows upon rows of
Exclusive, expensive
High end shops
Fragrances that smell
Like generational wealth
Diamonds that look
Like generational sweat
Tourists flock in
Locals mock about
Eisenhower
Traffic jams, construction crews
Road rage that feels as
Palpable as the smell of tar
Airport drives, what a slug
Deafening horns blaring out
No waiting, no letting anyone in
Everyone in a rush to get
Somewhere more important
Than other drivers’ destinations
Broadway
Hamilton is playing
Joffrey is in town
The men are blue
The show is cool
Groups of friends
Out on the town
Short skirts
High heels
Loud laughter
Carefree living
Roosevelt
Standing on platforms
Red, orange and green
On the way to work
On the way to a game
On the way to a restaurant
Doesn’t matter the occasion
It’s there to serve you
Night and day
