Sirens wailed nearby, signalling the townsfolk to take cover from a danger they had tried to convince themselves wasn’t real…
Even More Conveniences of Bamboo
Huo Linghun and Xiao Xin were sitting in their bamboo clearing. In front of them was a pile of small cut pieces of bamboo. Huo Linghun was holding one and poking at it with his knife. "Do you know what else bamboo is good for?" he asked.
"Yeah!" Xiao Xin said.
Huo Linghun turned to see him with a little piece of bamboo stuck onto each of his fingers. He laughed and said, "Well that's another thing!" Then he showed him what he'd made: a piece of bamboo lined with little holes.
"What is it?" Xiao Xin asked.
"It's a bamboo flute," Huo Linghun said. He held it up to his mouth and blew into it, making it whistle in different tunes as he put his fingers over the holes.
"Oh!" Xiao Xin said excitedly. "Can I try?"
Huo Linghun handed him the bamboo flute. When Xiao Xin blew into it it didn't whistle in the same way- it just sounded like air being blown through a tiny hollow tube. Xiao Xin gave the bamboo flute a confused look and said, "It sounds better when you do it."
Huo Linghun laughed. "You'll just need to practice to get it right," he assured him. He bent to pick up another small piece of bamboo and when he looked back again he found that Xiao Xin had stuck the bamboo flute onto his finger. He laughed again. "Or you can always do that."
